Migration

While resting near the Tawa Reservoir, Paheli noticed some unusual birds. Madhavji explained that these were migratory birds.

 What is Migration?

Migration is the seasonal movement of animals (especially birds) from one place to another.

 Simple meaning:
Migration = travelling to another place for a season

 What are Migratory Birds?

Migratory birds are birds that travel long distances every year to reach another region.

They usually return when the season changes.

 Why Do Birds Migrate?

Birds migrate mainly because of climatic changes.

Main reasons:

  •  Extreme cold in their original habitat
  •  Lack of food
  •  Suitable place for laying eggs
  •  Favourable weather conditions
  • Availability of water

 Important Features of Migratory Birds

  • Travel thousands of kilometres
  • Move in specific seasons
  • Often return to the same place
  • Fly in groups (V-shape formation)
  • Have strong navigation ability

Examples of Migratory Birds in India

  • Siberian crane
  • Flamingo
  • Arctic tern
  • Bar-headed goose
  • Demoiselle crane

 Link with Forest Products

What if we had no wood?

Without wood, we would face shortage of:

  • Furniture
  • Fuel
  • Paper
  • Building materials

 Alternatives to Wood

  • Metal furniture
  • Plastic (limited use)
  • Bamboo products
  • Recycled materials
  • Compressed agricultural waste boards

 Alternatives to Paper

Yes! Some alternatives exist:

  • Recycled paper
  • Digital documents (e-books, PDFs)
  • Cloth bags instead of paper bags
  • Bamboo paper
  • Agricultural waste paper

 Best solution: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

 Quick Revision

  • Migration = seasonal movement of birds
  • Migratory birds travel long distances
  • Main reason = climate change and food shortage
  • Birds migrate to lay eggs and survive
  • Wood and paper have alternatives
  • Conservation and recycling are important
