THE IMPORTANCE OF VARIATION

What Is Variation?

Variation means small differences found among individuals of the same species.

 Example:

  • Some people are tall, some short
  • Some bacteria can tolerate heat, others cannot

Organisms and Their Niche

  • A niche is the special place and role an organism has in its environment.
  • Each organism is adapted to live in a particular niche using its body design.
  • These body designs are controlled by DNA.

Accurate DNA copying helps organisms:

  • Maintain their body design
  • Continue living successfully in their niche

Reproduction and Population Stability

  • Reproduction helps organisms:
    • Increase their numbers
    • Maintain a stable population
  • Stable DNA copying keeps organisms well-suited to their environment

Why Is Variation Needed Then?

The environment does not remain constant.

Environmental changes can occur due to:

  • Increase or decrease in temperature
  • Changes in water levels
  • Natural disasters (floods, droughts, meteorites)
  • Climate change

These changes are beyond the control of organisms.

What Happens If There Is NO Variation?

Same body design

     ↓

Sudden environmental change

     ↓

Organisms cannot survive

     ↓

Entire population may die out

 This can lead to extinction.

How Does Variation Help in Survival?

If a population has variations, some individuals may be better suited to new conditions.

Flow Chart: Importance of Variation

Population with variations

        ↓

Environmental change

        ↓

Most organisms die

        ↓

Few organisms with useful variations survive

        ↓

They reproduce and increase in number

        ↓

Species continues to survive

Example: Bacteria and Temperature Change

  • Bacteria live in moderate temperature water
  • Due to global warming, water temperature rises

What happens?

Normal bacteria → die

Heat-resistant bacteria → survive

        ↓

They reproduce

        ↓

New population becomes heat-tolerant

This shows how variation helps survival.

Why Is Variation Important?

  • Helps organisms adapt to environmental changes
  • Prevents complete extinction
  • Ensures long-term survival of species
  • Forms the basis of evolution

 Summary

  • Variation = differences among individuals
  • Environment keeps changing
  • Not all individuals can survive sudden changes
  • Those with useful variations survive and reproduce
  • Variation helps species survive over time
