Adolescence and Puberty

 What is Adolescence?

Adolescence is the period of life when a child’s body changes and prepares for adulthood and reproduction.

  • It begins around 10–12 years of age
  • It usually lasts until 18–19 years
  • Adolescents are often called teenagers (ages 13–19)
  • In girls, adolescence usually starts earlier than in boys
  • The exact timing varies from person to person

During this time, you are neither a child nor a full adult — it is a transition stage.

 Growth During Adolescence

Growth starts from birth, but around age 10–11, there is a sudden increase in height, called a growth spurt.

Examples noticed by Paheli:

  • Boys suddenly becoming taller
  • Hair appearing above the lips

These are normal signs of growing up.

 What is Puberty?

Puberty is the stage during adolescence when the body becomes capable of reproduction.

  • It brings important physical changes
  • It is controlled by hormones
  • It ends when a person reaches reproductive maturity

 Key point:

  • Adolescence = whole period of growing up
  • Puberty = specific changes that make reproduction possible

 In Simple Words

Adolescence is the stage when children start becoming adults. During this time, hormones cause many changes in the body. These changes, called puberty, prepare boys and girls for reproduction. Sudden increase in height and hair growth are common signs that adolescence has begun.
