Reproductive Health

 What is Reproductive Health?

It means physical, mental, and social well-being related to reproduction.

It is not only about having babies, but also about:

  • Being healthy
  • Making responsible choices
  • Preventing diseases
  • Avoiding unwanted pregnancy

 Sexual Maturity vs Readiness

Just because puberty starts does NOT mean:

 Body is ready for pregnancy.

 Mind is ready for responsibility

Reproduction needs:

Physical maturity

Mental maturity

Emotional stability

 Social responsibility

Pressures on Young People

People may face pressure from:

  • Friends
  • Family
  • Society
  • Government

So It is important to:

Think carefully.

Make responsible decisions.

 Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Because sexual contact is very close, diseases can spread.

Examples:

  • Gonorrhoea
  • Syphilis
  • Warts
  • HIV–AIDS

Prevention of STDs

Condom use helps:

 Prevent infections

 Prevent pregnancy

 Pregnancy and Responsibility

Pregnancy puts heavy demand on a woman’s:

  • Body
  • Mind

If she is not ready, health can suffer.

So methods to avoid unwanted pregnancy are used.

These are called CONTRACEPTIVES.

Types of Contraceptive Methods

1. Barrier Method

Blocks sperm from reaching egg.

Examples:

  • Condom (male/female)

Egg not reached

      ↓

No pregnancy

2. Hormonal Method (Pills)

  • Changes hormone levels
  • Stops egg release

 May cause side effects

3. IUCD (Copper-T / Loop)

  • Placed in uterus
  • Prevents implantation

May irritate uterus

4. Surgical Method

Male: Vasectomy

(vas deferens blocked)

Female: Tubectomy

(fallopian tube blocked)

Flow Chart (Surgical Method)

No fertilisation

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Abortion)

  • Used to remove unwanted pregnancy
  • Must be done safely by doctors

Misuse for girl-child removal is illegal

 Female foeticide is a crime

 Sex Ratio Concern

Illegal abortion of female foetuses causes:

Falling number of girls

This harms society.

Balanced male–female ratio is necessary.

 Population Growth

Population size depends on:

Birth rate – Death rate

High population makes:

  • Education
  • Health
  • Jobs
    harder for everyone.

 Important Social Point

Poor living standards are mainly due to:

 Inequality
 Poverty
Unequal distribution of resources

—not only population size.

 One-Line Summary

Reproductive health includes safe sexual practices, prevention of disease, responsible parenthood, and awareness about contraception and population control.
