The brain and spinal cord are very delicate and important organs.
So, our body provides them with strong protection.
Protection of the Brain
1. Skull (Cranium)
- The brain is placed inside a hard bony box called the skull.
- It protects the brain from external injuries.
2. Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
- Inside the skull, the brain is surrounded by a fluid-filled covering.
- This fluid acts as a shock absorber.
- It protects the brain from sudden jerks and shocks.

Protection of the Spinal Cord
- The spinal cord runs through the vertebral column (backbone).
- The backbone is made of many small bones called vertebrae.
- These bones form a protective canal around the spinal cord.
When you touch the middle of your back, the hard, bumpy structure you feel is the vertebral column.

Why Is Protection Necessary?
- The brain controls thinking, movement, and life processes
- The spinal cord carries messages to and from the brain
- Damage to these tissues can be very dangerous
Key Points to Remember
- Brain is protected by skull and cerebrospinal fluid
- Spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column
- These protections prevent injury and shock
