TISSUES

Introduction

All living organisms are made up of tiny building blocks called cells. A single cell can perform basic life functions, but in most plants and animals, cells do not work alone. Instead, similar cells group together to perform a specific job. Such a group of cells is called a tissue.

What is a Tissue?

A tissue is a collection of similar cells (along with some supporting material) that work together to carry out a particular function in the body. These cells usually have the same origin, structure, and purpose.

For example, muscle cells join together to form muscle tissue, which helps us move. Similarly, nerve cells form nervous tissue, which carries messages throughout the body.

Why Are Tissues Important?

Tissues make it possible for complex organisms to function efficiently. Instead of every single cell doing every task, different tissues specialize in different activities. This division of work makes the body more organized and effective.

Because of tissues:

  • Our bodies can move
  • We can think and feel
  • Food can be digested
  • Oxygen can be transported
  • Plants can prepare food and stay upright

Without tissues, such organized life would not be possible.

Tissues in Plants and Animals

Both plants and animals have tissues, but their types and functions differ.

  • Plant tissues mainly help in growth, support, and food preparation.
  • Animal tissues help in movement, protection, transport of materials, and coordination.

In animals, there are four main types of tissues:

  1. Epithelial tissue – covers body surfaces and lines organs
  2. Connective tissue – supports and connects different parts of the body
  3. Muscular tissue – helps in movement
  4. Nervous tissue – carries messages and controls activities

Plants also have different tissues such as meristematic and permanent tissues, which help in growth and other functions.

From Cells to Organisms

The organization of living bodies follows a simple pattern:

Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ systems → Organism

This means tissues combine to form organs, organs work together as organ systems, and all systems together make a complete living organism.
